Purim-12th or 13th Month?
Disclaimer-
2 Peter 2:21-Verily if would have been better for them not have known the way of righteousness than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment that was delivered to them.
Greetings,
We are in the 12th month of the scriptural year. For some, since last year was a leap year in the Gregorian calendar, they had a leap year in the Biblical observed calendar. And this year, according to the biblical observed calendar, we have a 13th month. (I'll be going more into this in later entries)
Many groups, think when there is a 13 month year, they need to keep Purim in the 13th month. But, what does the book of Esther say? What month does the book of Esther fall in?
Let's take a look at scripture and see what it says.
The first time we see a timeline is in Esther 2:16-Esther took up residence in Xeres homes in the 10th month.
The 2nd time is in Esther 3:7-A lot was cast & the first day of Nisan (Abib) was to select a day and month for destruction of the Jews. The day that came up was the 12th month-the month of Adar.
Esther 3:12-The 13th day of the first month (the day before Passover), the secretaries wrote out the script in all languages of the people in all the land.
Esther 3:13-On the 13th day of the 12th month-All Jews were to be annihilated, men, women & children.
A copy of this edict was sent to every province.
Esther 4:16-The fast of Esther, she didn't eat or drink for 3 days. She asked others to do the same.
She asked for 3 days, not just 1 day.
Esther 8:9-23rd day of the 3rd month, Mordecai wronte in the name of King Xeres that Jews may assemble & protect themselves from any attackers.
Esher 8:12-The 13th day of the 12th month is when this was supposed to happen.
Esther 9:1-On the 13th day of the 12th month, the month of Adar, the edict commanded by the king was to be carried out, the Jews had the upper hand, upper hand over those that hated them.
Esther 9:15-The Jews came together on the 14th day of Adar (12th month).
Esther 9:17-13th day of Adar and the 14th day of Adar (12th month) they rested and made a day of feasting & joy.
Esther 9:16-Rural Jews, overse the 14th day of the month of Adar (12th month)as a day of joy & feasting, a day for giving present to each other.
Esther 9:20-22-Mordecai recorded these events & sent letters to all of the Jews throughout the provinces of King Xerex, to have them celebrate annually the 14 & 15th day of the month of Adar (12th month) as a time the Jews got relief from their enemies.
Esther 9:27-28-These days should be remembered & celebrate throughout the generations.
Esther 9:31-Establish these days of Purim at their designated times as Mordecai & Queen Esther had decreed for them. And their descendents in regard to their times of fasting & lamentation.
Scripture tells us that we need to keep this festival on the CORRECT days. As you can see, many times over in scripture, Purim is to be celebrated in the 12th month, not the 13th.
Don't we owe Queeen Esther & Mordechai that? They put so much at risk for the Jewish people.
Have a good Sabbath,
Lori
